Sustainable and tamper-proof
Faller Packaging presents recyclable, tamper-evident labels with first-opening indication
Faller Packaging has fulfilled two important requirements with the new tamper-evident paper label: The semi-transparent solution consists of a fibre-based, unmixed material – meaning it is completely recyclable. The label is also tamper-proof and therefore complies with the EN 16679:2014 standard.
“For the outer material, we opted for a semi-transparent paper made from pure cellulose fibres, with no chemical additives,” explains Niklas Mößner, the Product Manager at Faller Packaging who is responsible for the new tamper-evident label. “The product is therefore bio-degradable and can be recycled. In combination with a fibre-based folding carton or an outsert leaflet, the result is an unmixed end product that can be fed into the recycling process without sorting and thus achieves the maximum recycling rate.” With this new development, the specialist for folding cartons, leaflets, labels and combination products from a single source is consistently pursuing its course of supporting the pharmaceutical industry with sustainable packaging concepts. To close the cycle, the paper used comes from sustainable forestry.
The monomaterial solution is also state-of-the-art in terms of counterfeit protection: The tamper-evident label offers first-opening indication and thus complies with the EU-wide mandatory standard EN 16679:2014. Faller has prevented tampering with the packaging by positioning the label over the tuck-in flap of the folding carton. If the carton has already been opened, this is clearly visible. The user can open the closure more easily with additional perforations, but these are not absolutely necessary. In addition to product and brand protection, the label also impresses with its advantages in production: It stands out with optimum machinability, and its transparent nature means that no changes to the layout or design of the folding carton are necessary.
To ensure that the label adheres well to all lacquer-free and dispersion-coated folding cartons, Faller Packaging uses an acrylate-based adhesive, which has high levels of initial and final adhesion. This adhesive, specially developed for pharmaceutical applications, means the label cannot be removed without leaving residue, which also increases counterfeit protection since it clearly indicates possible tampering.
“We are very proud of this tamper-proof and sustainable label solution that we can now offer to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. For us, sustainability is a central component of our corporate DNA and more relevant than ever,” emphasises Mößner.
