Impli to accelerate real-time hormone monitoring technology at Birmingham’s PHTA

22 April 2026 -- Birmingham, UK -- Impli, a pioneering health technology company developing implantable biosensors for real-time hormone monitoring, has become the first commercial lab resident at Birmingham’s PHTA, targeting team growth, human trials and manufacturing readiness.

Focusing initially on improving women’s health, Impli’s platform is designed to help clinicians and patients understand hormonal fluctuations to make better-informed treatment decisions for menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and across fertility pathways including IVF. In future, further applications include cardiovascular disease, cancer, and brain health.

Its subdermal sensor detects and continuously monitors biomarkers in interstitial fluid, transmitting data in real time to its advanced dashboard. By revealing shifts in stress, metabolism and fertility as they happen, Impli delivers the biointerface that will make personalised precision medicine a reality.

Originally spun out of Imperial College London after more than a decade of research and development, Impli has chosen to expand to PHTA in Birmingham as the next stage in its growth journey.

Anna-Luisa Schaffgotsch, Founder and CEO of Impli, said: “Women’s health has long lacked the data needed to deliver truly personalised care. Hormones are currently measured through occasional blood tests that provide only a single snapshot in time, and our technology is changing that by turning snapshots into a continuous picture of what is happening inside the body. Establishing our new laboratory at PHTA gives us the environment we need to scale. Birmingham offers outstanding scientific talent, strong operational capability and access to the diverse clinical ecosystem that will be vital as we move towards first-in-human studies and future manufacturing.”

Located at the heart of Birmingham’s health and life sciences district, PHTA is the UK’s largest life sciences accelerator, bringing together companies, clinicians, academics and investors within a highly connected translational environment which includes specialist NHS infrastructure such as the co-located Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

Professor Gino Martini, CEO of PHTA, said: “We couldn’t be happier to welcome Impli to PHTA. Their technology represents exactly the kind of bold, high-impact innovation we want to support – science that has the potential to improve lives while building the UK’s health technology sector and creating high-value jobs here in Birmingham. Our model goes far beyond providing Category 2 laboratory space. We work in partnership with companies to help them grow, connect with clinicians and researchers, navigate commercialisation and access the expertise they need to succeed. Impli is a very exciting addition to our community.”

The West Midlands offers one of the UK’s most diverse regions, creating valuable opportunities for clinical research and development that reflects the global population. With leading hospitals, universities and specialist expertise located within close proximity, Birmingham is increasingly recognised as a centre for precision health innovation.
